Tony Womack signs with the Yankees
By Ray Mileur
I was hoping that Womack would be signed to a deal by today, but I didn't want it to be with the Yankees.
Tony Womack came back out of nowhere and re-established himself as a leadoff threat with the Cardinals in 2004, helping lead the team back to a National League Championship and World Series appearance. Apparently the Yankees liked what they saw and you have to wonder what are the Cardinals thinking about?
According to our friend, Jayson Stark of ESPN he is reporting that New York signed the second baseman to a two-year, $4 million contract Tuesday. The deal, which might be announced Wednesday, is subject to Womack passing a physical, The Associated Press is reporting.
The Cardinals currently have Hector Luna and fan favorite Bo Hart on the roster who could step in and play at second, but neither one can be seriously considered as the Cardinals leadoff hitter for the 2005 season.
The Cardinals have a big hole to fill with the loss of Womack, now they are not only looking for a second baseman but now they need a new leadoff hitter.
